GLO#5: Effective Communicator

We all know it’s important to communicate, right? I know I like to talk to people!(:

It is a great skill to know how to communicate well, and also in the most appropriate form. This can include using the right type of communication medium: shouting versus whispering, texting versus calling, or Japanese versus English. A big part of communication is knowing who your audience is, and adjusting the message so that it is understandable to them. It wouldn’t make sense to read a college paper on aircrafts to kindergarteners- that’s just silly! Instead, a teacher might choose a picture book on airplanes.

Veggie Standoff: This Public Service Announcement is promoting healthy living by eating vegetables. Even though it is only 27 seconds long, and has no dialogue, the acting, music, and sound effects are enough to set the scene. I knew for sure that the message we were trying to communicate was very apparent because it placed for the HMSA 2011 Teen Video Awards. One of the judges later told our team that we took first because our message was so clear to grasp, and that it was easy to relate to.

Breaking the Cycle: This miniature documentary told the story about one of Moanalua High School's teachers, who endured a childhood of abuse. It was within an English class unit called "Risky Business," focused around teenagers who are involved with acts ranging from drugs, to sex, to cyber-bullying. I especially think this documentary communicates the message of how this person overcame abuse because we also interviewed a couple of attorneys that handle these types of domestic and child abuse cases. This video was also a finalist in the 2011 Olelo Youth Xchange, showing us that our words did make an impact on others.
